Picapoll
Fortunately, the last 10 years some big changes have been made. In many of the Spanish winegrowing areas winegrowers started to realise that the best way to sell wines is not to copy new world wines but to produce exceptional wines which distinguish itself with the unique characteristics of their area and grapes.
Picapoll is a white grape variety, autochthonous in Pla de Bages. This grape has made an important comeback over the last few years, contributing to the success of this area. The grapes are small and mature slowly. There is also a blue version , named Picapoll Negra, related to the French grape Picpoul.
The wines made of picapoll are mostly young, elegant and easy to drink. Acidity is medium, fruity aromas and a pale yellow colour. These wines are starting to be recognized, also outside of Spain. Because production of this grape will not grow substantially in the coming years prices are expected to rise.
